"Linux OS Orientation"
http://www.bluecollarpc.net/downloads/LinuxOS_Orientation.mp3
Linux OS Orientation.... This is about a half hour chat as an orientation to the alternate Linux Operating System. It is not a technical discussion at all. The basis for this orientation is to familiarize persons with the free Linux OS as a security option for older Windows machines. Microsoft has discontinued support except for Windows XP SP 2 (service pack 2) and newer Vista. This means no more critical updates and just now in April 2007 was the .Ani Cursor zero day exploit leaving unpatched machines to fend for themselves with paid subscription antivirus and antispyware employing heuritics and defintions as the only security defenses along with a firewall. Enter Linux OS, the alive operating system with all the normal updates and upgrades ongoing we have been used to and including crtical security updates. The several items up front are the different "distros" available that are the distributions of Linux OS on CD's such as Mandriva, Debian, Ubuntu, and Suse. Linux OS is a step down from Windows and does not have the normal "installers" accustomed to. To get Linux either takes ordering the CD software free from Ubantu or a few dollars for others and more if softwares are included - or downloading it and burning it to CD's to then install it. There is also the ability to burn the 'Live CD" which will not install Linux but allow it to run on the CD. This will allow shopping around to which version you like best. Ubuntu is the only prototype windows installer version that allows direct download and installation over the Internet which is not fully workable as yet. All this is discussed as the main upfront things you need to know to begin and make choices. |

"Unfamiliar Behavior (browser) and Files"
http://www.bluecollarpc.net/downloads/Unfamiliar-Behaior-Files.wmv
This BCPCorg Modcast shows an actual live event with the Modcast Moderator computer, experiencing some "page jumping" and double or overlapping pages when going to websites browsing the internet (frames interrupted unexpectedly). The unfamiliar behavior points to a probable malformed adware, or Active X control from a malformed trojan/spyware package, or an Active X control or object as part of a malformed BHO (Browser Help Object) "phantom" or invisible Toolbar in Internet Explorer or transparent phantom "radio button" (Active X item, shortcut button in Internet Explorer). A tutorial modcast showing hunt down of a culprit and successful conclusion with all tips for any similar situation - 'How To". ....Note: A reference to a "Lexicon" registry item was inadvertent and it was actually "Lexico" (several items down in the registry) as the proper item. This has no real bearing in the tutorial, as there are no actual direct removal instructions for any specified threat - but was simply a "typo" in the tutorial I noticed, and I am adding this correction side note. |

Fall2007-2YrsOld_ReOrientations
Fall 2007 - BlueCollarPC.Net 2 years Old... Re-Orientations....This audio Modcast is celebrating the Two Year Anniversary of the Blue Collar PC Net with just at 4 Million Visitors and Website Users. Mentions of some current changes... the Blue Collar PC Yahoo Group re-opened and the PDA Mobile Cafe Yahoo Group re-opening and new Forum, as well as reasons for re-location of our BlueCollarPC.Net Forums to a more secure application, and the launching of our official BCPCNet WebLog. The re-orientation refers to Wireless Security which involves mobile computers (Palm, Pocket PC), Laptops, Notebooks, and Cellular - that all intertwine many times in usage, and Home Networking wireless security. Some disturbing and alarming ignorance involving WEP encryption verses new WPA -actually a couple years old now. Audio MP3 35.7M

Registry and Files Clean Up Tips
This Modcast is a tip showing how to first delete an empty left over folder and files after uninstalling a software, and then the Registry items - generally using a registry cleaner. You may have thought the registry cleaner software program removed the registry remnants of an uninstalled software, however in some cases - the registry cleaner may think items are still part of a valid and operational software program - and the registry cleaner has not removed the registry entries at all. Shown tips in finding the company name folder of a software as "parent folder" that software files and corresponding registry items will be listed under - rather then the software name itself. In these cases, the parent folder in both areas must be deleted for a "clean uninstall". Of course the reputation of a registry cleaner is based on this. You will find that it is better to have a less and passive registry cleaner as opposed to a very agressive cleaner which will present items for deletion that are not supposed to be delted, as shown. These are generally "dormant" (like binary system) control items for software for interaction and are not "orphans" at all. A very aggressive registry cleaner will present these (generally callled "Open with items" for example) and you never simply clkick okay to remove everything. A little homework, a little experience by viewing and researching first, then will give you knowledge and confidence in deleting things safely. "Registry and Files Clean Up Tips" ... 24.4 M

It is strictly, as the webpage presentation, only to open and view as a "dry run" without making any changes at all. Simply, the few clicks to open things and the full views of the most common areas accessed with a few tips about the manual deletion of files or malware in these general areas. 54.4M

Restricted Sites Does Not Work
Restricted Sites Does Not Work (9.63M/wmv)...... Audio / Visual BCPCNet-Modcast movie shows a website that was in Restricted Sites and I am at that website navigating it with the icon in bottom bar showing it is in Restricted Sites in the Internet Browser settings (Tools > Internet Options > Security > Restricted Sites > Sites ...or from Control Panel). I have mentioned before that the various mass utilites entries made for this simply are nothing more than a False Sense of Security. I have said that because I have seen this - and now proof here as I was able this time to capture it on e-film. As well, it is possible these type utilties can cause "incremental damage" to the Windows Registry thus in the worst case scenario causing, yes, the Windows Operating System to fail and / or other softwares such as an antivirus program for example. Go To our "Windows Registry Information" webpage here Windows Registry Information for full details explaing this. For XP Users the maximum size of the Windows Registry is 200M (Microsoft increased) and for earlier systems only a very modest 12M. You type a large email and it can get to 200K to 300K easily. This is not hard to understand that adding thousands or a million one liner domains (Example.com) or individual URLs (http : // something - is URL) to achieve "safe browsing - no malware will install because site is blocked in Restricted Sites" at some point of continual "updates" (adding more sites and domains) is going to exceed the Microsoft: Windows Registry Limits Imposed . This is the major reason I stopped using them years ago along with the fact that I discovered they do not work many times - it has been circumvented and cannot therefore be relied upon as safe except for 'feel good' surfing (false sense of security). 9.63M / .wmv

BCPCNet-Modcast... "Phisher Email Example": This bcpcnet-modcast is an excellent view and information on a real phisher email targeted as a credit card account rip-off scam that is so common these days. This is a typical unfortunate event that has costed over 3 billion dollars in e-thefts for just Americans alone in this past year 2007.
